Poster (News Article)
What is it?

The poster in form of a news article is a visual aid that is created for any content area besides English Language Arts (ELA). For the purpose of the SDAIE (Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English) strategy being presented, the poster was designed for a science lesson, focusing on the circulatory system, which is taught based on the California State Content Standards in the 5th grade.

How does it work?
The poster is an interesting and creative way to present important material that the students should know. It is a visual aid and therefore students who are visual learners would especially benefit from this strategy, although it is useful for all students.

The teacher can create a poster as a model and the students can create their own for any of the content areas such as science, math, or social science. The preparation of the poster or news article involves research, organization and use of appropriate writing conventions. The poster should contain the title of the topic, pictures, and interesting facts.

Why does it work?
The news article is to be posted at every student’s view and should remain accessible to them for reference as it contains material pertinent to the standards being addressed during the lesson.

Compiling the news articles is what makes this SDAIE strategy a success. The students have the teacher’s sample news article/poster to guide them. Every student creates a poster and the students have the opportunity to learn from each other.
